PTE Payment Declined? Here’s Why, and How to Fix It Before Your Slot Disappears
You picked your test centre, entered your card details, and the payment failed. This happens often enough with Indian-issued cards on Pearson’s checkout that it’s worth understanding before you panic and retry five times in a row.
Why this happens
Since March 2020, the Reserve Bank of India requires all newly issued or reissued debit and credit cards to have international transactions disabled by default. Since Pearson’s payment gateway processes your PTE fee as an international transaction, a card with this feature switched off will be declined, even though your bank account has sufficient balance.
How to fix it
- Open your bank’s app or net banking portal and look for “Card Controls,” “International Usage,” or “Manage Debit Card.”
- Enable international transactions specifically for online/e-commerce use, not just international ATM withdrawals — these are usually separate toggles.
- Retry the payment. If it still fails, confirm your daily online transaction limit hasn’t been hit, since some banks cap this separately from your overall card limit.
- If the amount was deducted but the booking didn’t confirm, don’t panic: this is usually an authorisation hold, not a completed debit, and typically reverses within 3–7 business days.
If retrying makes it worse
Repeated failed attempts can raise your card issuer’s fraud flag and cause further declines. If two attempts fail, fix the international-transactions setting first before trying a third time.
