Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Clearing and results day

What is Clearing and who is it for?
Clearing is how UK universities fill remaining places on their courses after exam results are released. You can use Clearing if you didn't meet your offer conditions, exceeded your expected grades and want to aim higher, don't have any offers, or have changed your mind about where to study. Over 50,000 students find their place through Clearing every year β€” it's a normal and widely used route into university.
When does Clearing open in 2026?
Clearing runs from 2 July to 19 October 2026. Most activity happens around A-level results day in mid-August, but registering your interest before then means partner universities can reach out to you as soon as places open up.
Do I need to register here to use Clearing?
No β€” Clearing is formally done through UCAS. Registering here lets our partner universities contact you directly and faster if you give your consent. Think of it as a head start: you tell us your course preferences and expected grades, and we connect you with universities that have matching vacancies. We also will call you on results day in order to help you navigate clearing.
Are these courses guaranteed to be available?
Course availability changes quickly during Clearing, especially around results day. We recommend registering your interest early.
I don't know which course or university to choose β€” what should I do?
Simply register here and one of our experts will help you navigate Clearing and call universities on your behalf.
Can I still apply to study in the UK if I've missed the January deadline?
Yes. The main UCAS deadline for 2026 entry was 14 January, but you can still submit applications after that date β€” universities will consider them if places are available. Any applications submitted after 30 June are automatically entered into Clearing. If you haven't applied yet, registering here is a good first step β€” we can connect you with partner universities that still have places open.
Can international students use Clearing?
Yes. International students can use Clearing in the same way as UK students. Keep in mind that you may need extra time to arrange your student visa, so registering your interest early gives you and the university more time to get everything in place.
Will you share my personal details with universities?
Only if you consent. During registration, you'll see a clear consent checkbox. If you opt in, we share your details β€” like your name, grades, and course preferences β€” with partner universities so they can contact you about relevant clearing vacancies. If you don't consent, your details stay with us.
What should I have ready before results day?
Have the following to hand: your exam results, your UCAS Personal ID and Clearing number (found in your UCAS Hub from results day), your phone and a charger, and a list of courses you're interested in. If you've already registered with us, we'll have your preferences on file β€” so you'll be one step ahead.
What is UCAS Extra and how is it different from Clearing?
UCAS Extra is available from 26 February to 1 July 2026. It's for students who have used all five UCAS choices and aren't holding any offers β€” it lets you apply to one additional course at a time. Clearing opens after Extra ends (from 2 July) and is a faster-paced process where universities publish remaining vacancies. If you don't secure a place through Extra, you can still apply through Clearing. Registering your interest here means we can support you through either route.
I'm currently in UCAS Extra β€” should I still register here?
Yes. Registering your interest doesn't affect your Extra application. If your Extra choice doesn't work out, you'll automatically become eligible for Clearing β€” and we'll already have your details and preferences ready so partner universities can reach out to you as soon as Clearing opens.
I haven't applied through UCAS at all β€” can I use Clearing?
Yes. You don't need to have applied earlier in the cycle to use Clearing. You'll need to create a UCAS account and submit an application (there's a one-off fee), and from there you can add a Clearing choice. Registering your interest with us now means partner universities can get in touch with you ahead of time, so you're not starting from scratch on results day.
